U.S. Issues Travel Warning for Congo | Travel Insurance Advice

The Department of State updated its travel warning for the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 2. ?Armed groups in the eastern and northeastern areas of the country are known to pillage, kidnap, rape, kill and carry out military operations that indiscriminately target civilians.

This region of the DRC has experienced extreme violence since over 1.9 million civilians were displaced after the Rwandan Genocide. Recently, renewed violence amongst Congolese rebel groups and former Rwandan militants has posed a serious threat to travelers in the region. According to the Department of State, travelers are frequently detained and questioned. Requests for bribes are very common, and refusal to pay bribes has occasionally resulted in injuries and deaths.

In addition to the risks of violence, U.S. travelers are at increased health risk due to outbreaks of deadly viruses and diseases in the area, including yellow fever, malaria, wild polio and measles.

The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa recommends U.S. travelers in the region to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program in order to receive up-to-date security information.

More information about this travel warning can be found on the U.S. Department of State website.
