Banking and investment magnate Darla Moore shattered boardroom glass ceilings; now, she's moved onto the golf course.?Along with former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, the South Carolina financier and philanthropist was invited to become a member of the Augusta National Golf Club on Monday.?

Moore, 58,?began her career in finance at Chemical Bank in New York, focusing on corporate bankruptcy and becoming the highest-paid woman in the banking industry. In 1991, she married visionary investor Richard Rainwater and eventually rose to the top of the eponymous firm he founded.

The Augusta membership isn?t Moore?s first crack at the glass ceiling. In 1997 she became the first woman?on the cover of Fortune magazine, which described her then as ?a cross between the Terminator and Kim Basinger.??

The South Carolina native earned her B.A. in political science in just three years at the University of South Carolina, before earning an MBA from George Washington University. In 1998, Moore gave a $25 million gift to her alma mater?s business school, which renamed it the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Over the years, Moore donated $70 million to the school.

In spite of her philanthropy, South Carolina governor Nikki Haley removed Moore from USC?s board of directors last year and replaced her with a campaign donor, a decision that sparked controversy. Following her dismissal, Moore pledged another $5 million to a new aerospace research facility at the school.

Moore and Rice are Augusta's first female members, breaking an eight-decade tradition that earned the Masters Golf Tournament host no shortage of controversy.?Commenting on her Augusta membership, Moore told The Associated Press, ?Augusta National has always captured my imagination,? calling her membership invitation a ?very happy and important occasion in my life.??

Wife of disgraced Chinese leader gets death sentence with reprieve

BEIJING ? The wife of Bo Xilai, the former high-flying Chinese politician, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve after being found guilty Monday of murdering a British businessman, marking the swift descent of a man who was once one of China's most powerful figures.

The sentence means Gu Kailai is likely to face life in prison, provided she does not commit offenses in the next two years, Reuters reported.

Zhang Xiaojun, a Bo family aide who admitted to helping Gu with the murder, received a 9-year jail sentence, a witness to the hearing said. Non-official media were not allowed in the courtroom.

Witnesses told NBC News that neither would appeal the decision.

Gu's prosecution in the killing of Neil Heywood was the first step in Beijing's efforts to resolve the biggest political scandal to hit China in decades. Bo, the former party secretary for the southwestern metropolis of Chongqing, had been a controversial figure in Chinese politics with his embrace of Marxist policies and his liberal use of local police to silence critics.

The high-profile case shed unwanted light on high-level government corruption and murder by Chinese Communist Party elite. With party leaders already highly sensitive to the public perception of instability and corruption within their ranks, the scandal broke as Beijing prepared for a once-a-decade leadership change.

The conviction of Gu, 53, was all but ensured when the murder charges were released by state media with reassurances from unnamed investigators that there was ample evidence to convict.

Scandal sends China's netizens into a feeding frenzy

"The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear," the investigator told China's official state news agency, Xinhua, late last month. "The evidence is irrefutable and substantial."?

What remained to be seen, though, was how the Communist Party would punish one of its own ? the wife of a man many experts once considered a serious candidate for China's all-powerful nine-person standing committee.

The answer was hinted at in the carefully composed narrative that has come out in the Chinese media about the case. During the one-day trial Aug. 9, the premeditated way Gu Kailai planned and carried out the murder of her former business partner was clearly evidenced, but it was steeped in justifications and rationalizations ? so much so that by the end of Xinhua's account, Gu came off as a protective mother pushed to the edge.

Heywood, 41, allegedly had become embroiled in a business dispute over a deal he entered into with Gu's son, Bo Guagua. When that business venture fell apart, Heywood allegedly sent a menacing email saying he would "destroy" Gu unless he was paid the tens of millions of dollars he believed he was owed from the deal.?

He then allegedly locked the 24-year old in a house in Britain.

"The few days last November, when I learned my son's life was at death's door, my mind indeed collapsed," Gu said, according to Xinhua. It was then, suffering from "chronic insomnia, anxiety and depression, and paranoia," according to an expert panel, that Gu decided she had to kill Heywood to protect her son.

"To me, that [Heywood's email] was more than a threat. It was real action that was taking place," Gu testified, "I must fight to my death to stop the craziness of Neil Heywood."

Allegedly enlisting the help of Zhang, her former family employee and an ex-soldier, Gu lured Heywood to Chongqing with the intention of poisoning him. On Nov. 13, Gu and Heywood had dinner before driving back to the villa he was staying at in the Nanshan Lijing resort.

There, the two drank whisky and tea until Heywood became drunk and vomited. Zhang then entered the room and helped Heywood to his bed while also allegedly slipping two vials ? one filled with a cyanide compound and another of a different drug ? of poison to Gu that she had procured earlier. When Heywood asked for water, Gu allegedly poured the poison into his mouth. ?

The next day, Gu told Wang Lijun, Chongqing's police chief and a trusted ally of Bo Xilai, of the killing.?

Wang secretly recorded the conversation but also helped to cover up the murder. In response to inquiries by the British government and the Heywood family, Chongqing police reported the death as an accident due to alcohol poisoning.?

Gu may have gotten away with murder, but she couldn't anticipate what came next: a falling-out between Wang and Bo Xilai that led the police chief to flee in March to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, where he sought asylum. There, with U.S. officials present, Wang dropped the bombshell about Gu's involvement in Heywood's murder.

Wang's explosive accusation and his taped evidence forced the Ministry of Public Security to reopen the case and may have sealed his own fate. Xinhua's account ominously noted that his entry to the U.S. consulate was "without authorization."?

Wang's trial is expected soon.

More questions than answers
Those who knew Heywood well have raised serious questions about the chain of events laid out by the Chinese courts. Could Heywood, who has been described as a gentleman and generally not violent, have really threatened Gu's son? Did Gu Kailai truly have a mental breakdown? Or was this a convenient way for the Communist Party to distance itself??

More important, what does the sentence bode for Bo? He's under house arrest while under investigation. Does his wife's show trial signal the end of the public phase of this scandal? Will Bo be disciplined internally by the Communist Party? Or will he also get his day in court??

The fact that Bo's name doesn't come up in Xinhua's account bodes well for his chances of riding out this storm. But in the opaque world of Chinese Communist Party politics, it will likely be a fruitless endeavor reconciling the official party narrative with what actually happened.

FSBO, for sale by owner, fisbo, sometimes pronounced ?fizz-bo?

Synopsis: Stick a sign in your yard and sell your house.

Upside: Avoid commissions, zero risk/commitment, showings done on your schedule, no one tells you what to do.

Downside: Market exposure can be costly or time consuming (and agents with ready buyers may not call you, or if they do, they will ask you to pay ~3% commission). FSBO folks must do some homework to get through the complexity with forms, laws, and contracting. If you sell your own house by yourself, you?ll be negotiating on your own behalf, and you could be the fool who has himself for a client. Why? Because you care so much about the outcome. Compare to the agent who has sold 100 houses and knows when to step on the gas and when to pull back and has probably learned what can and should be kept and what conceded.

Best usage: If you?re really not sure you want to sell or not in any rush, in a hot market (specific neighborhood, or general area), if you know your way around a real estate transaction already or have a local friend in real estate ready and willing to help, if you have more time than money, and wish to test the market, then FSBO may be a good place to start. Also, it?s good if you?re automatically a person who turns to the real estate pages in your paper religiously?because you care and stay informed about what?s going on around you in terms of objective real estate transaction information. If you can say what your house is worth without researching, that?s a good start (that can be overcome, but you?re starting in the hole).

Think twice: If your main reason to do this is to show those darn so-called professional agents that they are not worth their full commissions, you may learn why being a real estate agent has persisted as a viable profession for so long. If you do not have the ability to look at your house objectively as something that people buy and sell everyday and compare like two apples in a supermarket, you need to either step back and become objective or consider getting someone else involved.

The bottom line: Buying or selling real estate with no Realtor (R) involved on either side is no walk in the park. Not only is it pretty highly regulated requiring you to have disclosures ready, but it is rarely a transaction which either side enters into lightly or easily (and in today?s litigious society this can be problematic when it comes time to formalize offers and counteroffers and get from there through inspections to closing with no professionals around).

Apple responds to iPhone text message spoofing, reminds us how secure iMessage is

If you're a frequent texter, and the iPhone is your weapon of choice, there's a good chance you've been a wee bit concerned since yesterday's report that the device is vulnerable to a certain SMS spoofing attack. Basically, it's possible for a malicious individual to send a message and specify a reply-to number that is not their own, appearing as if they are someone else. We got in touch with an Apple representative and here's what we were told:

Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks. One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown website or address over SMS.

Even if you aren't on an iPhone, we'd like to remind you to be careful when texting. There are numerous services out there that let you send a message that appears to be from anybody you like -- regardless of what model, OS or even carrier the recipient is using. All the more reason to think twice before filing that loan application over SMS.

Conn. town settles dispute over girl's pet bunny

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? Officials in a Connecticut town have settled a zoning dispute over a local girl's 20-pound pet bunny after receiving calls and emails from across the country demanding that the rabbit be allowed to stay.

North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda said Friday that the town will allow 7-year-old Kayden Lidsky and her family to keep the Flemish giant named Sandy and change the zoning rule that led to a cease-and-desist order three weeks ago. The rule bars anyone from keeping rabbits and other livestock on properties smaller than 2 acres.

The town's zoning enforcement officer issued the cease-and-desist order while investigating a neighbor's blight complaint against the Lidsky family, whose property is less than 2 acres.

"All along I've said that little girl is not losing that rabbit," Freda said. "We have a ridiculous ordinance ... and we're going to change it."

The Lidsky family, however, interpreted the cease-and-desist order to mean that they had to get rid of Sandy. Josh Lidsky, Kayden's dad, had planned to appeal the order to a town board.

"I'm happy it's over," Josh Lidsky said. "I'm saddened that it had to go as far as it did. It's very tough for a 7-year-old to understand why people would do something like that. She's cried nightly."

Kayden tells the New Haven Register she's "excited" that she can keep it.

Since the dispute hit the news last week, nearly 4,400 people have signed an online petition on change.org urging the town to not force the family to give up the rabbit.

Freda said he's also spoken to and exchanged emails with about 1,000 people nationwide.

The ordinance was put in place about 50 years ago when North Haven was a large farming community, and it was designed to prevent people from raising and selling rabbits and other livestock on less than 2 acres in competition with farmers, Freda said.

Freda said the new ordinance will allow rabbits to be kept as pets.

Rogalski's new study has for the first time identified an elite group of elderly people age 80 and older whose memories are as sharp as people 20 to 30 years younger than them. And on 3-D MRI scans, the SuperAger participants' brains appear as young -- and one brain region was even bigger -- than the brains of the middle-aged participants.

She was astounded by the vitality of the SuperAgers' cortex -- the outer layer of the brain important for memory, attention and other thinking abilities. Theirs was much thicker than the cortex of the normal group of elderly 80 and older (whose showed significant thinning) and closely resembled the cortex size of participants ages 50 to 65, considered the middle-aged group of the study.

"These findings are remarkable given the fact that grey matter or brain cell loss is a common part of normal aging," said Rogalski, the principal investigator of the study and an assistant research professor at the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Rogalski is senior author of the paper, which is published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society.

By identifying older people who seem to be uniquely protected from the deterioration of memory and atrophy of brain cells that accompanies aging, Rogalski hopes to unlock the secrets of their youthful brains. Those discoveries may be applied to protect others from memory loss or even Alzheimer's disease.

"By looking at a really healthy older brain, we can start to deduce how SuperAgers are able to maintain their good memory," Rogalski said. "Many scientists study what's wrong with the brain, but maybe we can ultimately help Alzheimer's patients by figuring out what goes right in the brain of SuperAgers. What we learn from these healthy brains may inform our strategies for improving quality of life for the elderly and for combatting Alzheimer's disease."

By measuring the thickness of the cortex -- the outer layer of the brain where neurons (brain cells) reside -- Rogalski has a sense of how many brain cells are left.

"We can't actually count them, but the thickness of the outer cortex of the brain provides an indirect measure of the health of the brain," she said. "A thicker cortex, suggests a greater number of neurons."

In another region deep in the brain, the anterior cingulate of SuperAger participants' was actually thicker than in the 50 to 65 year olds.

"This is pretty incredible," Rogalski said. "This region is important for attention. Attention supports memory. Perhaps the SuperAgers have really keen attention and that supports their exceptional memories."

Only 10 percent of the people who "thought they had outstanding memories" met the criteria for the study. To be defined as a SuperAger, the participants needed to score at or above the norm of the 50 to 65 year olds on memory screenings.

"These are a special group of people," Rogalski said. They aren't growing on trees."

For the study, Rogalski viewed the MRI scans of 12 Chicago-area Superager participants' brains and screened their memory and other cognitive abilities. The study included 10 normally aging elderly participants who were an average age of 83.1 and 14 middle-aged participants who were an average age of 57.9. There were not significant differences in education among the groups.

Most of the SuperAger participants plan to donate their brains to the study. "By studying their brains we can link the attributes of the living person to the underlying cellular features," Rogalski said.

I dont think eating a low index food would subtract points from a high index food that had been eaten.

I?m not sure how much those indexes matter for healthy ppL.

My diet is very hi carb since it?s mostly vegetarian w/ many egg whites, abt 4 fish oil caps on most days, and abt 5 oz of fish every other day for the omega 3 fish oils, DHA and EPA.

And I?m not concerned the the gi and gL.

A baked potato will have regular instead of hi gi if it?s chilled after cooking. I dont know if the chilling is required overnite.

Renaissance women fought men, and won

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? A three-year study into a set of manuscripts compiled and written by one of Britain's earliest feminist figures has revealed new insights into how women challenged male authority in the 17th century.

Dr Jessica Malay has painstakingly transcribed Lady Anne Clifford's 600,000-word Great Books of Record, which documents the trials and triumphs of the female aristocrat's family dynasty over six centuries and her bitter battle to inherit castles and villages across northern England.

Lady Anne, who lived from 1590 to 1676, was, in her childhood, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. Her father died when she was 15 but contrary to an agreement that stretched back to the time of Edward II -- that the Clifford's vast estates in Cumbria and Yorkshire should pass to the eldest heir whether male or female ?- the lands were handed over to her uncle.

Following an epic legal struggle in which she defied her father, both her husbands, King James I and Oliver Cromwell, Lady Anne finally took possession of the estates, which included the five castles of Skipton, where she was born, Brougham, Brough, Pendragon and Appleby, aged 53.

Malay, a Reader in English Literature at the University of Huddersfield, is set to publish a new, complete edition of Lady Anne's Great Books of Record, which contains rich narrative evidence of how women circumvented male authority in order to participate more fully in society.

Malay said: "Lady Anne's Great Books of Record challenge the notion that women in the 16th and 17th centuries lacked any power or control over their own lives.

"There is this misplaced idea that the feminist movement is predominantly a 1960s invention but debates and campaigns over women's rights and equality stretch back to the Middle Ages."

The Great Books of Record comprise three volumes, the last of which came up for auction in 2003. The Cumbria Archives bought the third set and now house all three. In 2010, Malay secured a ?158,000 grant from the Leverhulme Trust to study the texts.

Malay said: "Virginia Woolf argued that a woman with Shakespeare's gifts during the Renaissance Period would have been denied the opportunity to develop her talents due to the social barriers restricting women.

"But Lady Anne is regarded as a literary figure in her own right and when I started studying the Great Books of Record I realised there is a lot more to her writing than we were led to believe.

"I was struck by how much they revealed about the role of women, the importance of family networks and the interaction between lords and tenants over 500 years of social and political life in Britain."

In her Great Books of Record, Lady Anne presents the case for women to be accepted as inheritors of wealth, by drawing on both documentary evidence and biographies of her female ancestors to reveal that the Clifford lands of the North were brought to them through marriage.

She argued that since many men in the 16th and 17th centuries had inherited their titles of honour from their mothers or grandmothers, it was only right that titles of honour could be passed down to female heirs.

She also contended that women were well suited to the title of Baron since a key duty of office was to provide counsel in Parliament, where women were not allowed. While men were better at fighting wars, women excelled in giving measured advice, she wrote.

Malay said: "Lady Anne appropriates historical texts, arranging and intervening in these in such a way as to prove her inevitable and just rights as heir.

"Her foregrounding of the key contributions of the female to the success of the Clifford dynasty work to support both her own claims to the lands of her inheritance and her decision to resist cultural imperatives that demanded female subservience to male authority.

"Elizabeth I was a strong role model for Lady Anne in her youth. While she was monarch, women had a level of access to the royal court that men could only dream of, which spawned a new sense of confidence among aristocratic women."

Malay's research into the Great Books of Record, which contain material from the early 12th century to the early 18th century, reveals the importance of family alliances in forming influential political networks.

It shows that women were integral to the construction of these networks, both regionally and nationally.

Malay said: "The Great Books explain the legal avenues open to women. Married women could call on male friends to act on their behalf. As part of marriage settlements many women had trusts set up to allow them access to their own money which they could in turn use in a variety of business enterprises or to help develop a wide network of social contacts.

"Men would often rely on their wives to access wider familial networks, leading to wives gaining higher prestige in the family."

Lady Anne was married twice and widowed twice. After her second husband died she moved back to the North and, as hereditary High Sherriff of Westmorland, set about restoring dilapidated castles, almshouses and churches.

Malay said: "Widows enjoyed the same legal rights as men. While the husband was alive then the wife would require his permission to do anything. Widows were free to act on their own without any male guardianship."

The Great Books also provide a valuable insight into Medieval and Renaissance society, with one document describing a six-year-old girl from the Clifford family being carried to the chapel at Skipton on her wedding day.

Lady Anne also recounted her father's voyages to the Caribbean and she kept a diary of her own life, which includes summaries of each year from her birth until her death at the age of 86 in 1676.

Malay said: "The books are full of all sorts of life over 600 years, which is what is so exciting about them."

Malay's Anne Clifford Project, the Great Books of Record was the catalyst for an exhibition of the Great Books of Record, which are, for the first time, being exhibited in public alongside The Great Picture at the Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal.

The Great Picture is a huge (so huge a window of the gallery had to be removed to accommodate its arrival) triptych that marks Lady Anne's succession to her inheritance.

The left panel depicts Lady Anne at 15, when she was disinherited. The right panel shows Lady Anne in middle age when she finally regained the Clifford estates. The central panel depicts Lady Anne's parents with her older brothers shortly after Lady Anne had been conceived.

Every year, the folks from CTIA like to invite industry experts out to their fall show called CTIA Enterprise & Apps. This year though will be a little different as they've now announced they're changing the name and some of the focus of the conference to go along with it. Now named MobileCON 2012 and debuting October 9-11, 2012 at the San Diego Convention Center, MobileCON 2012 focuses exclusively on the mobile enterprise IT community:
