BREAKING NEWS: Will Booker T be named the new SmackDown General Manager?
As first reported on WWE?s Breaking News mobile alert service, one of the strongest names in consideration for the role of SmackDown General Manager may, in fact, be former World Champion and current show color commentator, Booker T. However, will this conjecture prove true at tonight?s SmackDown event, live in Indianapolis' Bankers Life Fieldhouse?
The fury of speculation began Monday night on Raw when it was revealed that WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon would personally return to SmackDown to name the new GM of the blue brand. Immediately, rumors began to circulate as to whom, in fact, would be taking the reins.
Booker T would be a very interesting choice for several reasons. Not only does the legendary Superstar have the in-ring experience to lead by example. He has also been a staple voice on the show since finding his place at the SmackDown announce table in February 2011. In addition, he continues to step through the ropes and into conflict whenever necessary, making it clear that he is not the least bit hesitant about mixing it up to get his point across.?

While we are busy trying to enjoy this weekend (if it would stop raining long enough and not be quite so hot, maybe check out ?Global Warming?s Terrifying New Math? for some insights), you might want to note some important going ons for next weekend, Saturday August 4.
First, the City of Fort Lauderdale is inviting its citizens to participate in an all day charette process regarding downtown Broward Boulevard. The Broward Boulevard Design Workshop, which will be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, will focus on ideas to improve this corridor as there are already plans underway addressing transportation mobility in both the downtown area and along the Broward Boulevard corridor. Recently awarded an $18 million TIGER grant by the Department of Transportation to make ?The Wave? a downtown street car project a reality, the city is engaging its citizens to participate in this important work. The Wave has community partnerships with Broward County, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), State of Florida (FDOT), City of Fort Lauderdale, Downtown Development Authority, and Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The programme was conceptualised against the backdrop of thousands of young people entering the criminal justice system as offenders, and the need to mitigate the growing incidence of juvenile crime within their environments.

10 by 10 in the Triangle - Triangle Arts and Entertainment
?The 10 by 10 in the Triangle? short-play festival will open on July 6th at The ArtsCenter and run Thursday-Sunday through July 22nd
ArtsCenter Stage?s 11th annual 10 by 10 in the Triangle short-play festival, which concludes its three-week run on July 19-22 in the center?s Earl and Rhoda Wynn Theater in Carrboro, NC, is a mixed bag of comic one-act plays that range from hilarious to ho-hum.
Act I begins with ?It?s What?s for Dinner,? written Jonathan Graham and directed by Sylvia Mallory. It is a whimsical comedy about the politics of food, set in a refrigerator overcrowded with Fred Corlett, Page Purgar, Mary Rowland, and Geraud Staton, playing characters that are all far past their sell-by dates.
Next up is ?Meet Cute,? written Aishwarya Jha Mathur and directed by Gregor McElvogue. Two strangers played by Jess Jones and Nilan Johnson meet in an airport lounge, while ostensibly waiting for the flights carrying their Significant Others to touch down. Jones and Johnson have no romantic chemistry whatsoever, and they banter ? not at all convincingly ? before strolling off into the sunset together, leaving her boyfriend and his girlfriend stranded ? and that?s not funny.
In ?Northern Lights,? written Tyler McClain and directed by Mark Filiaci, Brandon Garegnani?s late-night visit to former girlfriend Laurel Ullman, to get her outside to see the aurora borealis (a.k.a. the Northern Lights) is another DOA (Dead on Arrival) romantic comedy.
?A Short History of Weather,? written Jonathan Yukich and directed by Michael O?Foghludha, is a little funnier. The weather is the safe but not very interesting topic for a couple (David Berberian and Leanne Norton Heintz) who never quite hit it off.
?Misfortune,? written Mark Harvey Levine and directed by Chris Chiron, is by far the best that 10 by 10 in the Triangle has to offer. It just gets funnier and funnier as a hapless diner at a Chinese restaurant opens fortune after fortune cookie with messages of gloom and doom and imminent death. Fred Corlett gives a side-splitting performance as a guy whose future may be all used up, as fortune teller Marlene Dietrich told Orson Welles in Touch of Evil (1958); and comic cameos by Jess Jones, Page Purgar, and Geraud Staton spice up the proceedings.
Act II begins with ?Perfect Strangers,? written Peter Snoad and directed by Julie Tomkovick. David Berberian and Laurel Ullman meet on a mountainside in the midst of a hike, and share some uncomfortable moments talking about her cancer.
?The Quiz,? written K. Alexa Mavromatis and directed by Leslie Cloninger, asks, Can you fail a Cosmo sex quiz, girlfriend? Page Purgar and Leanne Norton Heintz get a few chuckles while they search for the answers.
?After You,? written Libba Beaucham and directed by Jerry Sipp, is the nadir of 10 by 10 in the Triangle. It is an increasingly tedious comedy of manners in which David Berberian and Geraud Staton assume British accents(?) to argue over which one will hold the door for the other.
?Please Report Any Suspicious Activity,? written Rick Park and directed by Carolyn McDaniel, is a lame sci-fi comedy set during a subway ride. A hapless commuter, played by Fred Corlett, is trapped in a car with a gay couple played by Brandon Garegnani and Nilan Johnson, who happen to be sharks(!?!) in human form, bickering over whether Garegnani has had an interspecies romantic encounter.
?Oedipus: The Prequel,? written Matt Fotis and directed by John Boni, mercifully wrings down the curtain on the 11th annual 10 by 10 in the Triangle short-play festival ? and none too soon. Geraud Staton plays the title role of the ancient Greek ruler of Thebes who accidentally murders his father and marries his mother, and Mary Rowland plays Jocasta as an ancient Greek cougar on the prowl. Jess Jones and Page Purgar are largely wasted in supporting roles.

Exclusive: U.S. weighs retail sweep after Wal-Mart bribery scandal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. authorities are considering launching a wide-ranging examination of the retail industry for violations of an anti-foreign bribery law, after Wal-Mart and other retailers have come forth with their own potential offenses, people familiar with the matter said.

Other retail companies have also since reported to U.S. agencies suspicions of their own potential violations, which in turn has the Justice Department and SEC considering a sweep of the entire industry, said the sources, who are working with companies who have unearthed potential issues but declined to be identified.
The people would not reveal which retail companies have reported problems, but the development could signal that the retail industry faces an expensive legal headache that could last for years.
An SEC spokesman, a DOJ spokeswoman and Wal-Mart declined to comment.
It is not clear which firms would be included in an industry sweep by authorities. A number of U.S. retailers, selling everything from apparel to electronics and office products, have extensive operations abroad.
The government teams that enforce the U.S. anti-foreign bribery law, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, have often turned to industry-wide reviews when they find misconduct at a few companies that could be indicative of more widespread problems.
The SEC as a regulatory agency usually conducts the sweeps, though the DOJ does on occasion participate as well.
Both agencies, for example, sent letters to a handful of pharmaceutical companies in 2010 asking for information about their businesses in countries around the world.
Earlier this year, the SEC sent letters of inquiry to major U.S. movie studios asking for information about their dealings in China.
"It wouldn't surprise me," said Daniel Nardello, a former federal prosecutor, about the prospect of an industry-wide review of retailers.
"They have taken an industry-based enforcement approach, and I'm sure this has piqued their interest and gotten their prosecutorial juices flowing," said Nardello, who now runs Nardello & Co, which helps companies investigate potential FCPA violations and other issues.
It is also not unusual for companies to go to the authorities to disclose their own problems after another industry player's problems come to light, though the defense bar has debated for years whether self-reporting an issue to the government provides a tangible benefit.
In several recent cases, the Justice Department has attempted to make clear that benefit, lawyers said.

Even without charges, foreign bribery investigations can tie up company resources and management attention.
"Sometimes they are fairly focused, but even if they are focused they still require companies to do a significant amount of work," said Lucinda Low, a partner at the law firm Steptoe & Johnson who heads the firm's FCPA practice.
Requests from previous sweeps have asked for documents that range from dealings with a specific government agency, to detailed inquiries about a compliance program, to costs related to certain activities, lawyers familiar with such requests said.

Syrian armored column closes in on Aleppo
AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria sent thousands of troops surging towards Aleppo in the early hours of Wednesday, where its forces have been pounding rebel fighters from the air, engulfing the country's largest city in total warfare to put down a revolt.
Recent days have seen Syria's 16-month-old uprising transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the slightly smaller capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.
President Bashar al-Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.
Syrian forces fired artillery and rocket barrages early on Wednesday at the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize the town from rebels, causing mass panic and forcing hundreds of families to flee the area, residents and opposition activists said.
The 216th mechanized battalion headquartered near Tel started bombarding the town of about 100,000 people at 3:15 a.m. (0015 GMT) and initial reports indicated residential apartment blocks were being hit, they said.
"Military helicopters are flying now over the town. People were awakened by the sound of explosions and are running away," Rafe Alam, one of the activists, said by phone from a hill overlooking Tel. "Electricity and telephones have been cut off."
Opposition activists said thousands of troops had withdrawn with their tanks and armored vehicles from the strategic Jabal al-Zawiya highlands in Idlib province near the Turkish border and were headed towards Aleppo.
Rebels attacked the rear of the troops withdrawing from the region at the villages of Orom al-Joz and rami near the main Aleppo-Latakia road and at the village of al-Bara west of the Aleppo-Damascus highway, activist Abdelrahman Bakran said from the area.
In Aleppo, helicopters swirled overhead firing missiles throughout Tuesday, residents said. Rebels were battling government forces by the gates of the historic old city. Troops fired mortars and shells at rebels armed with rifles and machineguns.
"I heard at least 20 rockets fired, I think from helicopters, and also a lot of machinegun fire," a resident near one of the areas being shelled, who asked to be identified only by his first name Omar, said by telephone.
"Almost everyone has fled in panic, even my family. I have stayed to try to stop the looters; we hear they often come after an area is shelled."
Residents said fixed-wing jets had also flown over the city, followed by loud noises, although there were contradictory reports as to whether they had fired.
Some residents said they believed the planes had dropped bombs, but others said booming sounds could have been caused by supersonic jets breaking the sound barrier. A correspondent for Britain's BBC television said the jets had fired.
Assad's forces have occasionally launched air strikes from fixed-wing jets on other cities during the uprising, but tend to rely on helicopters for air strikes in urban areas.
The 16-month-old uprising has entered a new and far more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.
Last Wednesday, an explosion killed four members of Assad's closest circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a 1970 coup.
Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from power for many months, and now say they believe his days are numbered. But they fear that he will fight to the bitter end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.
Syria raised the alarm even further on Monday by confirming that it had chemical and biological weapons. In a statement that may have been intended to reassure the world but seemed to have the opposite effect, it said it would not use poison gas against rebels, only against external threats.
Assad's international protector Russia added its voice on Tuesday to those of Western countries warning him not to use chemical weapons. Western diplomats said Russia may have pressed Syria to make Monday's statement after the United States and Israel openly discussed their worries about chemical weapons.
U.S. President Barack Obama said the world would hold Assad and his entourage accountable "should they make the tragic mistake of using those (chemical) weapons".
Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, a member of Assad's inner circle who fled Syria this month, appeared on al Arabiya television in his first public comments since defecting. He called on troops to abandon the government.
"I address you ... as one of the Syrian Arab Army's sons who reject the criminal behavior of this corrupt regime. The honorable people in the military would not accept these crimes," he said on al-Arabiya television.
Tlas is a member of the Sunni Muslim majority, and his defection was seen as a sign that the Sunni establishment had abandoned Assad, a member of the Alawite minority sect.
MOSQUE ATTACK
Elsewhere in the country, activists said government troops and pro-Assad militia known as shabbiha had attacked a mosque in a village northwest of the city of Hama.
"Troops and shabbiha left the roadblock on the edge of Shariaa and crossed the main road and began firing automatic rifles on the worshippers as they were entering the mosque," activist Jamil al-Hamwi said by telephone from the area.
"We have confirmed the names for 15 bodies and it is estimated there is a similar number still to be collected from the streets," said Hamwi, who uses a pseudonym for security reasons. The account, like others from activists, could not be confirmed. Syria restricts access by international journalists.
At least nine people were killed in army shelling of al-Herak, a town south of Deraa, the cradle of the revolt against more than four decades of Assad family rule, activists said.
Video posted on the Internet showed the shattered bodies of a veiled woman and six children in colorful pyjamas, some of them very young. Four lay on one doctor's table.
TROOPS TIGHTEN GRIP ON CAPITAL
In Damascus, troops were trying to snuff out rebel resistance in several areas, including Barzeh, near the centre, and the southern districts of Hajar al-Aswad, Asali and Qadam.
Tanks prowled the streets of Midan, a neighborhood recaptured by the army from rebels on Friday.
Assad reshuffled his security team on Tuesday, according to a Lebanese security source. He said Ali Mamlouk had been named intelligence chief in place of Hisham Bekhtyar, one of four top Assad security aides killed in last week's blast.
Israel, which has publicly discussed military action to keep Syrian chemical arms or missiles out the hands of Assad's Lebanese militant allies Hezbollah, said there was no sign any such diversion had occurred.
"At the moment, the entire non-conventional weapons system is under the full control of the regime," a senior Israeli defense official, Amos Gilad, told Israel Radio.
The ferocity of the Syria conflict has only worsened, with 1,261 people killed since fighting intensified in Damascus on July 15, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from anti-Assad activists.
That made last week by far the bloodiest in an uprising in which activists say at least 18,000 people have been killed.
Civilians are suffering, with three-quarters of medical facilities in Damascus closed and displaced people sheltering in schools or parks, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said.
A UNHCR spokeswoman said that the number of displaced people within Syria had risen to about 1.5 million.

Look Inside 38 Studios Disaster Shows Overconfident, Clueless Curt ...
Jason Schwartz and Boston Magazine provide a thorough autopsy of 38 Studios, the fledgling video game company started by former Red Sox star Curt Schilling that received $50 million of a $75 million guaranteed loan from the state of Rhode Island to produce a fantasy online role-playing game, only to burn through the money and collapse.
Schwartz managed to snag interviews with Schilling and several of his employees and paints a picture of a man who really had little idea about how to run a game development company. Schilling blew through millions of his own savings as well as public funds with a terrible plan that scared potential investors away:
By 2006, Curt Schilling had earned more than $90 million playing baseball, not including endorsements. But what he really aspired to was being ?Bill Gates rich.? He admired the global impact the Microsoft founder had made through his philanthropy, and wanted to do the same. Schilling, who has an autistic son, imagined providing $200 million to open the Shonda Schilling Center for Autism Research.
Creating a video game would be what catapulted him to that wealth. More specifically, he would build a massively multiplayer online game (or, blessedly abbreviated, an MMO) ? the type that allows people from across the world to play with and against one another. As a kid, Schilling had been obsessed with computers (his first was an Apple II), and during his baseball career, rather than go out carousing, he spent his time playing MMOs. A favorite of his was the industry leader, World of Warcraft, a vast fantasy landscape filled with wizards, elves, and warriors that has more than 10 million paying subscribers.
Successful MMOs are incredibly lucrative, but they?re also the hardest type of game to build. You?re programming not just a game, explains Dan Scherlis, the first CEO of Turbine, a maker of MMOs, but a complex social system for thousands, if not millions, of users. A normal video game might require a couple of years to develop, but an MMO takes at least twice as long. Because of that, many gaming entrepreneurs start small, working their way up from something simple for a mobile device, or perhaps a single-player game for PlayStation or Xbox. But Schilling had grander ideas. He was going to challenge World of Warcraft. His fantasy world would be similar (you want elves and wizards, you?ve got elves and wizards), but he envisioned deeper plot lines and more-striking visuals. He persuaded R. A. Salvatore, the bestselling novelist from Leominster, to dream up the fictional universe, and the famed comic artist Todd McFarlane, a noted baseball fan, to conceive its artistic vision.
If Schilling?s story were a Shakespearean tragedy, ?He was going to challenge World of Warcraft,? would be the line in which you realized the hero was doomed. World of Warcraft currently has more than 10 million subscribers. This is a drop in numbers over the last two years. According to figures from a site devoted to tracking MMO subscription numbers, no other game out there comes anywhere close. Even an MMO about Star Wars couldn?t crack 2 million. This was a doomed plan from the start.
Schilling also had no real sense on how to run a start-up business, which became apparent long before he went begging Rhode Island for money. He launched the company with $5 million of his own and expected investors to come on board to pay the rest (he estimated the cost to produce an MMO as $40-50 million. World of Warcraft cost somewhere around twice that to build and maintain). He blew through tons of his own money in perks for employees.? He made many, many questionable decisions:
Schilling put his wife, Shonda, on the board of directors. Shonda?s father received a job in IT (by all accounts, he performed admirably), and her mother was given the title ?philanthropy and charity manager.? Meanwhile, Shonda?s uncle, William Thomas, became COO. Though a seasoned businessman, Thomas had no experience with video games, much less MMOs. Schilling took to calling him ?Uncle Bill? around the office, and even in meetings with outsiders. According?to the case study, Thomas told Schilling?it was making them look bad and to?stop. The nickname caught on with?the staff, anyway.
Most troublesome of all was the?unique profit-sharing plan Schilling devised for his first employees. Wasserman, Bussgang, and Gordon?write that, since Schilling was bank-rolling the company by himself, he?was hesitant to give up equity in it.?So instead of luring early prospective hires with stock options, he promised?to share all profits 50-50 with them.?Upon arriving as CEO, Close recognized that ?investors? heads would explode? when they saw the model, since they?d?be bearing all the risk but reaping only?half the reward. Close eventually convinced Schilling to scrap the policy and replace it with stock options.
But investors would have nothing to do with the extremely risky venture. Schwartz spoke with Todd Dagres of Spark Capital in Boston. He looked at what was going on at the company and decided against investment:
?He was very forthcoming to tell you how much of his own money he put in,??Dagres recalls. Schilling tells me that he considered that kind of disclosure a selling point: ?I assumed that they would look at it as, ?If he?s this far in, it?s not going to fail. He?s not going to let this thing fail.?? Instead, Dagres was shocked that Schilling was plunging so much into such a risky venture. The VC left with his checkbook firmly closed.
Time and again, though, Schilling emerged from meetings like this one thinking he?d hit a home run. ?There was never a single one that he didn?t walk out of saying he absolutely killed it,? says a former employee who attended a number of investor meetings. But over and over, there was no investment. Still, Schilling remained optimistic. ?Curt sincerely believed that Copernicus was the best thing since sliced bread,? the former employee says. He ?could not imagine a scenario where other people would not see the same potential he did. His attitude is always, This is gonna?happen, the deal is going to close.
It?s quite remarkable how little Schilling grasped about the business side of his favorite hobby. Video game enthusiasts who don?t have the millions to invest that Schilling did are more than capable of grasping why Schilling kept striking out. So, then, it probably shouldn?t come as a surprise that Schilling didn?t realize that turning to the government for a massive loan would turn Project Copernicus pretty much radioactive. Video games obviously and clearly do not need government support in order to succeed in the marketplace. The Rhode Island loan had to have been seen as a giant red flag to potential investors.
Schilling takes a lot of the blame for the company?s failure, but still wants to point the finger at Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee for revealing confidential information about the company (such as that the company spending $4million a month).
But after reading the ridiculous way the company had been operating, Chafee comes out smelling like a hero. Rhode Island taxpayers have every right to be upset. This was an indefensible use of government funding.

When you create your free my1login account, you'll define both a password and a key phrase. The password lets you log in to the site and connect with your encrypted passwords store, while the key phrase is used in local decryption of those passwords.
Logging in is an unusual process. To eliminate the possibility of password capture using a keylogger or screen scraper, the site does not ask you to enter the password. Rather, it requests the letters at specific character locations, entered by selecting from a drop-down menu. There's nothing for a keylogger to capture, and it'd be tough for a screen scraper to identify exactly what you selected from the menu. I did find myself counting on my fingers quite a bit, to figure out which is the tenth or fifteenth character.
The key phrase creation page recommends using a long phrase, and spaces are permitted. If you're a fast typist you can create a lengthy key phrase that would be tough for any malefactors to guess. And if you're really worried about keyloggers you can enter it using a virtual keyboard.
Once you've authenticated yourself to the site, the site authenticates itself to you. At the time you create your account, you're assigned a special icon that appears in the top right corner of my1login's pages. If you don't see that icon, you've been duped into connecting with a fraudulent copy of the site. This kind of phishing protection is similar to the SiteKey system used by many banks and credit card companies.
Password Management
If you're accustomed to using a fully automated password manager like LastPass 2.0 (free, 5 stars) or RoboForm Everywhere 7 ($19.95/year direct, 4.5 stars), you may find my1login just slightly tedious. Because it doesn't install a local client or browser plug-in, it can't automatically capture passwords as you log in. You must enter each password manually.
You enter the login URL, a name for the entry, the username, and the password. You can optionally add tags for searching, or a free-form note. In the standard free edition, your saved password bookmarks appear in a searchable alphabetic list. If you pay $2 per month for the Pro edition, you get the option to organize them into a multi-layer folder structure.
With mSecure Password Manager ($19.95 direct, 2 stars), both password capture and playback are fully manual. My1login manages to automate the login process using a bookmarklet. That's a tiny piece of Javascript, small enough that the whole thing fits in a bookmark.
The first time you use my1login in a particular browser, you must drag the my1click bookmarklet onto the browser's bookmarks bar. To use one of your saved bookmarks you first click it within the list and then click the bookmarklet button. LastPass and RoboForm both offer a bookmarklet option for use in unsupported browsers or on systems where you don't have permission to install a plug-in.
My contacts at the company say the product roadmap includes "some fantastic upcoming functionality including the capability to handle non-standard and multi-page login forms." At present, it strictly handles standard logins, which admittedly are used by the vast majority of secure sites.
You can directly import passwords from RoboForm, KeePass, and Clipperz, or from a CSV file. I had no trouble exporting my LastPass passwords to CSV and importing them to my1login, though understandably those for sites with non-standard logins didn't work.
In addition to the password-filling bookmarklet, LastPass includes one to fill Web forms with user-defined personal data. My1login focuses strictly on passwords, not on form filling. According to CEO Michael Newman, "We feel that in order to help password managers become better embraced by the mainstream population, improving their security, it is important to focus our service on the core proposition of password management."

Two-time breast cancer survivor helps raise funds
CALGARY ? When the fear became almost unbearable, Rejeanne Taylor reminded herself that all she could do was put one foot in front of the other.
The two-time breast cancer survivor would walk to help cope with a disease that cruelly invaded her body twice ? once in 1998 requiring a mastectomy, and again eight years later, when she endured rounds of gruelling chemo therapy and radiation.
?When you?re out there walking, you?re not a cancer patient. You?re a vibrant, capable, physically strong person,? Taylor told the Herald. ?It was so important for me to have something beyond just the cancer in my life.?
Now cancer-free, Taylor walks to raise money and Sunday she added 40-kilometres to her running tally at the Weekend to End Women?s Cancers.
The annual 60-kilometre walk raised $1.8 million in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which funnels dollars toward research and cancer therapies at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and clinics across the province.
?It?s cancer. It?s mysterious and unpredictable, and that?s why we have to keep raising money for research. There?s too many children and too many young people that face this journey,? Taylor said.
One of those young people is 25-year-old Ashley Hart.
A month before her wedding day last July, doctors told Hart that she had breast cancer.
She faces surgery for a double mastectomy on Aug. 7, but Sunday she crossed the finish line with a smile on her face, flanked by family, having walked 60 kilometres to raise more than $13,000.
?I don?t really know how to take it easy. I golfed through my chemo,? Hart said. ?When you?re the person going through it, you just do what you have to do.?
When she was first diagnosed, Hart admits she felt angry.
?I was confused. At the time I wanted to know why it was happening to me and why it happened at 24,? she said. ?But I got those answers later.?
Doctors told Hart that she was a carrier of BRCA1 ? a rare, mutated gene responsible for increasing the risk for breast and ovarian cancers.
?I was more upset for my mom and my husband. My mom wished it was her and not me. That was upsetting.?
Organizers said the Weekend to End Women?s Cancers, the largest fundraiser for women?s cancers in Alberta?s history, has raised $47 million for the Alberta Cancer Foundation since its inception.
?This year in Alberta, 1,950 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 270 with gynecological (cancers). Funds raised by The Weekend are put to use immediately, and support cutting-edge research, the development of new therapies and prevention programs for breast, cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancers,? said Myka Osinchuk, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
Close to a thousand Albertans participated in the two-day trek that ended Sunday.
