Some claim that 'The Hunger Games' is a rip-off of the 1999 Japanese series 'Battle Royale.' But the storyline of a death match being employed by authoritarian rulers dates back to the Roman Empire.

It's not unusual that "The Hunger Games" movie's arrival in theaters has been accompanied by feverish anticipation on the Internet. The online world is easily and often set ablaze by enthusiastic fandom, and Susanne Collins' wildly popular series of novels about a dystopian future where teenagers fight to the death on television has sold millions of copies.

But it's not just fandom that's fueling "The Hunger Games" online fire. It's also being fed by controversy: specifically, whether Ms. Collins' series is a "rip-off" of Japanese novel "Battle Royale."

Certainly, the debate online is energetic. A quick Google search of "hunger games battle royale" turns up half a million results with headlines like "Why the 'The Hunger Games's Snub of 'Battle Royale' Matters," "5 Reasons The Hunger Games Isn't Battle Royale," and "Who Would Win in a Fight?: Battle Royale vs. The Hunger Games." YouTubers debate the similarities and differences among clips and trailers of the originals.?

A description of Koushun Takami?s book, published in 1999, makes those similarities clear. In a near-future dystopia, a despotic government selects teenagers by lottery to participate in the titular competition, in which the youths are thrown into the wilderness with a variety of weapons in order to participate in a televised death match. There are also commercial similarities: Battle Royale, too, made a successful jump to the big screen in a 2000 cult-classic release directed by Kinji Fukasaku. (Quentin Tarantino called it his "favorite movie of the last 20 years.")

But proponents of "The Hunger Games" being its own work have plausible arguments too. They note that?"The Hunger Games" is at its heart a science-fiction story set long after a global war, whereas "Battle Royale" is more of a near-future, modern-world thriller. They also argue that "Games" is about broader revolutionary themes, while "Battle" is focused on simple, visceral survival. And of course, the violent, bloody "Battle" is not the young adult novel that "Games"?is.

Despite their fans' passion over the heritage of "Games," neither author appears interested in fueling the debate. Collins told The New York Times that she only learned of Battle Royale after she submitted her first book to her publisher. ?I had never heard of that book or that author until my book was turned in. At that point, it was mentioned to me, and I asked my editor if I should read it. He said: ?No, I don?t want that world in your head. Just continue with what you?re doing.? ?? And Takami told ABC News that he was amused by the debate, though he appreciated his fans' enthusiasm.

All in all, it seems to be another case of there being nothing new under the sun. After all, both novels and movies were predated by Stephen King's novella-turned-blockbuster "The Running Man," which was about ? surprise, surprise ? a reality-television death match run by a totalitarian government in a dystopian future. All three stories drew from books like George Orwell's "1984" and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies." And if one follows the trail back long enough, you eventually reach the Roman circuses, which were ? you guessed it ? real death matches employed by absolute rulers to keep the population in line.

And so long as their readers enjoy their stories, the authors are not concerned. "I think every novel has something to offer," says Takami. "If readers find value in either book, that?s all an author can ask for."

The Black Queen Hypothesis: Basis of a new evolutionary theory

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Microorganisms can sometimes lose the ability to perform a function that appears to be necessary for their survival, and yet they still somehow manage to endure and multiply. How can this be? The authors of an opinion piece appearing in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, on March 27 explain their ideas about the matter. They say microbes that shed necessary functions are getting others to do the hard work for them, an adaptation that can encourage microorganisms to live in cooperative communities.

The Black Queen Hypothesis, as they call it, puts forth the idea that some of the needs of microorganisms can be met by other organisms, enabling microbes that rely on one another to live more efficiently by paring down the genes they have to carry around. In these cases, it would make evolutionary sense for a microbe to lose a burdensome gene for a function it doesn't have to perform for itself. The authors, Richard Lenski and J. Jeffrey Morris of Michigan State University, and Erik Zinser of the University of Tennessee, named the hypothesis for the queen of spades in the game Hearts, in which the usual strategy is to avoid taking this card.

"It's a sweeping hypothesis for how free-living microorganisms evolve to become dependent on each other," says Richard Losick of Harvard University, who edited the paper. "The heart of the hypothesis is that many genetic functions provide products that leak in and out of cells and hence become public goods," he says.

As an illustration of the hypothesis, the authors apply it to one particular microbial system that has been a source of some confusion: one of the most common plankton species in the open ocean, Prochlorococcus, which has a much smaller genome than you might expect. Scientists have wondered how Prochlorococcus has managed to be extremely successful while shedding important genes, including the gene for catalase-peroxidase, which allows it to neutralize hydrogen peroxide, a compound that can damage or even kill cells. Prochlorococcus relies on the other microorganisms around it to remove hydrogen peroxide from the environment, say the authors, allowing it to fob off its responsibilities on the unlucky card holders around it. This is an instance of how one species can profit from paring down while relying on other members of the community to help out.

Losick says the Black Queen Hypothesis offers a new way of looking at complicated, inter-dependent communities of microorganisms. "I have a special interest in how bacteria form biofilms, complex natural communities that often consist of many different kinds of bacteria. The Black Queen Hypothesis provides a valuable new way to think about how the members of these biofilm communities coevolved."

Pending homes sales dip in February

CNBC's Diana Olick has the pending home sales from February, which fell .5 percent.

Contracts to purchase previously owned homes unexpectedly fell in February, suggesting a further pullback in sales as the housing market struggles to regain its footing.

The National Association of Realtors said on Monday its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed in February, slipped 0.5 percent to 96.5, also implying a weak start to the spring selling season

Economists polled by Reuters had expected signed contracts, which lead existing home sales by a month or two, to advance 1.0 percent after a 2.0 percent rise the prior month. Contracts signed were up 9.2 percent in the 12 months to February.

"This suggests a pretty weak start to the spring selling season. The warm weather in the winter seems to have pulled forward sales," said Jacob Oubina, a senior U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets in New York.

U.S. stocks held steady at higher levels after the data, while Treasury debt prices were lower.

Data last week showed sales of previously owned homes fell in February and the decline in signed contracts suggests home purchases could be weak again in March.

Other reports last week also showed declines in home building activity and new home sales in February. Despite the early signs of fatigue, both economists and realtors remain optimistic the housing market will recover this year.

"Indeed, February has been a bit of a pothole for the housing market. It was evident in housing starts, new home sales, and existing home sales," said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto.

"But with affordability high and job creation improving, there is still much opportunity for improvement in the housing sector."

Contracts fell in three of the four regions last month, but jumped 6.5 percent in the Midwest.

Finally, "Game of Thrones" is returning to HBO. Ned Stark won't be back, but Tyrion, Daenerys, Cersei, Jaime, Robb, Joffrey, Catelyn and the rest are ready to clash swords again. The second season will loosely follow the plot of "Clash of Kings," the?second book in George R.R. Martin's bestselling series. Fans of the books eagerly await the introduction of new characters including Brienne of Tarth, the woman warrior who fights as well as any man,?and Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late King Robert.?It may be time to?finally give in and order HBO. ?(April 1, 9 p.m., HBO.)

Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum, Carrie Underwood, The Band Perry and Rascal Flatts will be among the performers at the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast live from Las Vegas. It's been 35 years since "Slap Shot," the cult classic film about a trio of hockey-enforcer brothers. Some fans of that?movie?have high hopes for "Goon," starring Seann William Scott as a regular Joe who's?good in a fight?and gets sucked into playing hockey even though he can't skate. Liev Schreiber plays the veteran player who drops gloves against Scott. (Opens March 30.)

Not every critic loved 2011's "A Dangerous Method," but Roger Ebert found David Cronenberg's film "absorbing." Keira Knightley plays a woman who's a patient of two of the most famed figures in psychology, Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). It didn't play in many theaters, so now's your chance to check it out from the safety of your own couch, psychiatric or otherwise. (On DVD and Blu-ray March 27.)

Four never-before-released-on-DVD episodes of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"are coming out this week. "King Dinosaur, "The Castle of Fu Manchu," "Code Name: Diamond Head," and "Last of the Wild Horses are the films, and the classic shorts "X Marks the Spot" and "A Day at the Fair" also come in for riffing from Joel, Mike and the Bots. (Out on DVD March 27.)

Ok readers, stay with me on this one until the end, I promise I will get to the point.? A somewhat popular social game/experiment people play now is, ?who did better??? For those not familiar, this is where you see a couple and decide which one you think got the better deal with their spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend.??? Some of you may think this is shallow, immature, unkind, etc.? However, society DOES judge people, there are winners and losers at everything in life, and life IS a competition.? So this is our reality and if you want to win, you better understand it.

Anyway, one would think that people would look to see who is tall, skinny, good looking etc.? However, on many occasions in the past, I?ve heard people make comments to support their judgment and evaluation of the guy by saying:? he has a Rolex on, look at the ROCK on her finger?winning!, he looks well off, or check out the car!?? Basically many of the comments focus on assessment of the guy?s monetary status.? Most have agreed that the ability to support someone and provide for a family is an issue on the mind when thinking about the future.? Women are more advanced than men in this manner and assess far more about a potential mate in making their decisions.?? Most men pretty much make the scientific caveman assessment, ?girl pretty, smell good,?<grunt>?.? Sadly we are that simple sometimes.

I?ve more recently heard many people talk about others in very physical and health related terms.? I don?t mean that they talked about how ?hot? someone is, but rather that they are in good shape (note: good shape is not what Hollywood defines), look like they take care of themselves, obviously work out, are athletic etc.? They believe that if their ?prospect? isn?t healthy or fit, that they have a reduced capacity for earning, a reduced capacity for contributing to them or their kids one day, how long they may live, and a variety of other things.

To me it?s a GOOD THING to start putting more value on health and fitness and what it represents as an asset when looking at others.? If more people would do this, we would see a huge change in our medical costs, disease, and many other issues.

So why am I rambling about all of this?? Is health and fitness the new currency?? Do some people still look at wealth or monetary assets as being a judgment of their appeal or worth to the other person??.yep.? Do some people just review ?looks???..fewer and less people are actually.? Instead, they look at the bigger picture.? The real surprise for some and the real ?growth area? is in people increasingly looking at someone?s health and fitness.? If we think about it, it makes sense and not just for evaluating a ?prospect? in regards to a new relationship or when looking at a couple and trying to figure out ?who did better?? but also when evaluating new employees, new partners, service providers, business ventures etc.

How you take care of yourself and your health and fitness is now perceived as a representation of how you approach everything else in life too. If a person can?t even take care of your own health and fitness, then how can we trust them with our money, our family or our business?? So today, more than ever, health and fitness IS the new currency?.it is the new consideration for being ?well off?, it is an image or sign of what and who you are, and it?s a symbol that you are likely competitive and are prone to winning at what you do by taking control of it!? So, guys if you haven?t already, it?s time to wake up and do something to keep up.? If you want to compete and win in the marketplace?.not just with women?s assessments of you, but also for business, you better focus on your health and fitness.? Good Luck!

Here are five DIY projects that are easy, fast, affordable and

1. Country Flower Box

A planter filled with spring blooms on the front porch sends a cheerful greeting to visitors. Homeowners can easily customize inexpensive flower boxes by dressing them up in beadboard, painted in bright spring colors. Molding can be used to contour the edges.

2. Eco Table Cover

Topping as inexpensive side table with cork gives it an organic look that suits the sensibility of spring. Cork sheets, available at hardware and crafts stores, can easily be cut to fit the surface of the table. Cement adhesive holds the cork firmly in place. The edges can be trimmed with wood molding for a finished look.

3. Spring Wall D?cor

Homeowners who may be wondering what to do with old CDs can reuse them to create a springtime tableau. The square plastic containers work perfectly as mini picture frames. Dr. Princess Olufemi-Kayode, Executive Director, Media Concern Initiative, explains to NKRUMAH BANKONG-OBI why domestic violence is prevalent in the society

You mentioned emotions in general terms. What are the causes of violence in the home, between couples or lovers?

As a professional, I believe we are looking into love issues in our own country, in the context of the African culture. You have lots of issues of communication breakdown. We rarely communicate here. A man has issues he doesn?t communicate, a woman has issues she is not pleased with, she can?t speak up, regardless of her education. That means that you even have some who are judges, who still get slapped around, they come and pose and put on big sunglasses. A lot of this happens. It is not only the local woman that is being battered. You find out that those ones are a bit vocal, they come to court and say: ?he beats me too much, I?m tired?. It?s like the better educated you are, the more difficult it is to speak up. And we are also looking at society?s perception.

We have a belief about marriage, that if you are not married, there is something wrong with you; either you are loose or something. There are so many things that put a woman in a funny situation. Now, when a man has anger issues, some of them progress with it as children. Actually some people know their children have anger issues, but they don?t see it as a disorder; we don?t see disability in these things. And then, they grow up to the point they begin to hit a woman. The reason why it is called violence is because it leads to death. But you don?t need to hit somebody to death before something is done. Many women have died, some are carrying internal wounds and have resigned to fate, saying: ?That is how life is; who do I go and complain to? Who is going to take me in?? You are looking at issues of finance, social welfare; who is going to take care of who? It?s not our state?s concern. If you go to the state, they send you back home. If you go to your family, they send you back to your husband?s house. So, there are many things that keep women in violent homes.

Parents can start, and we can actually solve those problems. When you begin to have communication issues, we need to deal with it, we need to see a guidance counsellor or a marriage counsellor. But we don?t do that here.

Is it true to say that women are on the defensive side of domestic violence? The reason I ask is that I have seen cases of men suffering under women?

We have more battered women, in terms of the gender equation. A man can be battered by his wife. It happens to many men, too.

Some societies have laws like the Clare?s and Sarah?s laws in England and Wales, that provide for intending couples to have a personality understanding of their spouse, before getting involved in marriage or relationship. Do you think that such laws can work in a society like ours?

Even in societies where they have those laws, they still have battery. What works so far is checking medical history. It is basically individuals getting to understand the issues that ?because I meet a fine man doesn?t mean that he doesn?t have issues?. In the relationship, you begin to see that the signs are always there.

We are even talking of the law that would protect you if you have been beaten. We are picking a bit of those gender-based issues, taking our time and coming up with something, like Lagos State. Some states use the federal laws. But how do we implement them? The law enforcers and the lawmakers appear to have no correlation. They are not aware that there is a domestic violence law and what they need to do with it. There needs to be a lot of education on both sides. If I walk to a police station now and say I have just been beaten by my partner, they will tell me to go back home or they will try to bring in the man to try to mediate. If you go to the Social Welfare Centre, they want to mediate. If you go to other agencies of justice, they want to mediate. Mostly, the women really just want the men to stop beating them, not that they want to divorce their husbands. Seriously, majority of them just want the beating to stop.

You said there is a disjoint between the lawmakers, the law enforcers and the society in general. In the absence of cohesion, what is the future like for battered people and for those who are gradually walking into it?

One basically thinks there needs to be a lot more of education for singles, for lawmakers and for the law enforcers. Education is encompassing. Apart from understanding the law, they need to understand the issue. I?ll give you an example. A woman came to us and complained: ?I?m pregnant and my husband is not even doing anything.? I asked what happened? She said: ?I?m separated from him, I moved the kids away from him based on some issues of domestic violence; he came back to beg and on one of such occasions, he slept with me and I got pregnant. Since I got pregnant I told him and he was coming once a while and I have children only through Caesarean Section.? She had three children, but she lost one. She had all of them by Caesarean. We were able to get the man to beg him. We had to go to his office, he was a media professional. We wrote to the Managing Director of his organisation, so as to be able to have access to him. We put pictures of their wedding so that there was something to show that he was her husband and there was no divorce. We packed everything and said: ?On humanity grounds, come and see this woman; she is due to be delivered of her baby.? They had a special hospital that had been taking care of them. Finally, he showed up. When they were talking, you needed to see them. If you had not met the woman before, you wouldn?t believe her. If you were somebody who was not working in that area, you may want to kill the woman for lying against him. They will tell you: ?I love my wife, the day she left was the day I died.? These men look very responsible. They say: ?She is the only one in my life, she is this, she is that.? When that man finished, she said: ?Okay, I will see what we can do.? But it was Media Concern Initiative that raised the money for her operation because if she had started labour here, there would have been chaos.

Some men don?t beat their wives, what they do is emotional abuse. They say things like ?You are not good.? ?Is it because I married you?? And women become like objects.

There are rural areas where these things happen but they are not reported.

Yes, because it is part of our lives. That is how we do it. We don?t know any better.

What are agencies such as yours doing for people who are suffering in the dark?

All over the country, there are people who are working. But you must note that in our country, civil societies are not supported by the government, whereas that is done in other countries through allocation to support NGOs engaged in social work. They like what we do, but do not support us financially. There are other social issues in the country. As long as those things are not addressed, there will continue to be attacks. We are rearing children and when they finish schooling, there are no jobs. What do you expect them to do? It?s either they molest whoever they find or pick up a girlfriend and slap her around. You go to work, return at 10 pm and you still have to wake up at 5 am; you don?t rest. Now, if you have a wife or you are cohabiting, she is the one who takes the resultant anger.

Are you saying in a nutshell that majority of those who indulge in this act are depressed?

Yes. They are. There are problems with such people. All they need is therapy. He needs a person to whom he can open up about his problem without being intimidated or losing his self-esteem.

What do you tell people who have fallen victim already?

Just walk out of the relationship. The reason I?m asking the person to walk out is not to destroy the marriage. It?s because I don?t want people to die. They can say: ?He has not hit me up to that level.? But he has hit you until your head got battered, until it was stitched. What kind of argument did you have to make someone hit you to a point where they will stitch your head? The next time you might receive a knock and you probably won?t come out of it alive. The children you are waiting for, are they better off with a mother who is alive but not at home or the one that is dead?

We have had cases of acid baths and even voodoo reported. Are these also domestic violence?

That is at the height of it, particularly acid bath. The person that pours acid or hot water on you, or throws you down from the staircase, must have shown signs of what he can do while you were courting.

What should people who walk out of faulty relationships, yet are being stalked, do?

Make a report to the appropriate authority. The signs are clear because stalkers don?t just begin to do odd things. Excessive jealousy?they want to have you all to themselves even before marriage.
